Liverpool youngster Trent Kone Doherty has been named in the Ireland Under-17 squad for this week’s European Championship elite phase qualifiers.
He is one of 20 players called into the panel for the trip to Cyprus, for games against the hosts, Italy and Ukraine.
Of the squad, 16 hail from the EA Sports LOI Academy. Doherty is a former Derry City academy prospect.
Ireland reached the Elite Phase with a win 4-0 over Armenia and draws against Belarus (2-2) and Norway (1-1) last October.
They kick off their elite campaign today against Italy, before matches against Ukraine on Friday and Cyprus next Monday.
Head coach Colin O'Brien said: “The Elite Phase will be a step-up in standards and step-up in quality. I've no doubts the players will embrace it and be ready for the challenge.
“It's a tricky assignment getting through the first phase of qualification but we've done that and we've done that consistently over the years.”
