Liverpool vs Man City prediction and odds: Back City to put down an early marker by winning Community Shield

The best two teams in England meet on Saturday as the curtain comes up for a new season that promises so much for both sides.

Man City are red-hot 4/7 favourites to add another Premier League title to their trophy cabinet in 2023 and the Betfred rate Liverpool (5-2 second favourites) as the only serious rivals to the reigning champions. These sides have dominated England's top league for the last four season's and it's big odds that anyone else can snap the status quo and break into the top two.

Pep Guardiola has brought in two targeted signings that will improve the squad, notably the world's most coveted young striker - Erling Haaland, along with Kalvin Phillips from Leeds, who adds depth to the defensive side of City's central midfield.

Haaland is going to have to hit the ground running if City are going to make up for the goals scored by outgoing offensive players Raheem Sterling and Gabriel Jesus, who scored 21 goals between them in the Premier League last season. The Norwegian has been installed as 11/4 favourite in Betfred 's Premier League Golden Boot market and it would be no surprise if he fired City to not only another Premier League title but also a first Champions League success.

Liverpool were the best attacking side in the Premier League last season, averaging +2.52 xGF per game, but it is normally the best defensive side that wins the top division and, even with Virgil van Dijk marshalling their back line, Jurgen Klopp's side fell slightly short of City's high standards in that area of the pitch.

The departure of Sadio Mane, who scored 16 Premier League goals last term, means that there will be a new look to Liverpool's offensive line this season and, on the evidence of some of Liverpool's pre-season games, it might take some time for this new-look attacking unit to bed in.

The Reds have been scoring goals but they have missed a whole host of chances, which is a concern when it comes to games against sides like City, who just don't give up many big opportunities.

Liverpool vs Man City prediction

City look in great shape to hit the ground running this season and that could allow them to build an early lead over Liverpool, a lead that will prove very difficult for Liverpool - or anyone else, to erode.

Darwin Nunez has been among the goals but he's not been overwhelmoingly convincing in the early stages of his Anfield career and he might just need some time to bed into this Liverpool attacking unit. If that does prove the case, then Liverpool's attacking threat will not be at the same level that it has been in recent seasons.

With that in mind, let's back City to put down an early marker for the new season by seeing off Jurgen Klopp's side at Wembley on Saturday.
