Liverpool 'to pay bonus' to Wolves if they beat them and win Premier League title

Liverpool will have to make a bonus payment to Wolves as part of the Diogo Jota transfer if they win the Premier League title on the final day, it has been reported.

Jota joined the Reds from Wolves in a deal worth up to £45million back in 2020. But the Midlands side received just £4m up front, while the rest of the fee relying on bonus payments and instalments.

The Daily Mail claims that the Merseyside club has paid a further £13m to Wolves in instalments and another payment will be due if Jota wins his first league title this weekend. The Reds will claim the Premier League title if they beat Bruno Lage's side and rivals Manchester City fail to edge past Steven Gerrard's Aston Villa at the Etihad.

Wolves however, also have an incentive to try and beat Jurgen Klopp's side. Currently in eighth, Wolves will gain an extra £2.2m in prize money if they maintain their current position, though they will have to battle with Leicester City and Brighton & Hove Albion who sit just a couple of points adrift of the top-eight.

City go into this Sunday's game against Villa knowing a win will secure them the league title for the second year running, and Klopp admitted Villa boss Steven Gerrard will likely be extra motivated to stop them from doing so.

"I can only understand these situations by thinking of myself in that role," said the Reds boss. "If I could play a game that would help Dortmund, that would help Mainz, it would mean for me an extra motivation.

"That's how it is. But I don't play, and Stevie doesn't play. It's a shame - much more a shame that Stevie isn't playing than I'm not playing! We are all human beings to have these kind of things. Stevie will take it 100% serious I'm absolutely sure, without me calling him. I don't have to. Probably the rest of the club did it already, but I didn't!"

Klopp's comments came after club captain Jordan Henderson joked he was planning to ring Gerrard to urge him to beat City in Sunday's game.

Speaking after Liverpool beat Southampton to keep the title race alive, the midfielder joked: "I might give Stevie a call this week, hopefully he can do us a favour!"
