Liverpool team bus attacked with brick after Man City clash as police launch investigation

Liverpool's team bus was attacked after their defeat to Manchester City, with the Sky Blues confirming they would "fully support" the police investigation into the incident.

The Reds travelled to the Etihad Stadium on Saturday lunchtime, but fell to a thumping defeat to Pep Guardiola's side. Though they went ahead through Mohamed Salah 's early goal, City surged to a convincing 4-1 win with three strikes in the second-half.

Following the defeat, Jurgen Klopp 's side then saw their bus attacked on their trip back to Merseyside. City confirmed the attack with a statement on Saturday evening, in which they pledged to support an investigation launched by Greater Manchester Police.

" Manchester City FC has been made aware that Liverpool FC’s coach sustained damage on its return journey following today’s game. We understand an object was thrown towards the coach in a residential area," the statement read.

"Incidents of this kind are totally unacceptable, and we strongly condemn the actions of the individual(s) responsible. We will fully support Greater Manchester Police’s investigation into this incident in any way we can.

"Additionally, the Club is disappointed to have heard inappropriate chants from home fans during the game today. We regret any offence these chants may have caused and will continue to work with supporter groups and officials from both clubs to eradicate hateful chanting from this fixture."

According to The Athletic, a brick was thrown towards the Liverpool coach, causing a window to crack. It is reported that no-one was injured on board the coach, with Liverpool also supporting the police's investigation.

Greater Manchester Police confirmed they had received reports of an attack on the Liverpool bus. A spokesperson for the force also revealed that an investigation has now been launched.

"Following today's Premier League fixture between Manchester City and Liverpool, GMP received reports of criminal damage to Liverpool FC Player's coach," a spokesperson for Greater Manchester Police told Mirror Football.

"It is reported the incident took place at approximately 3.40pm on Ashton New Road close to the junction of Rowsley Street. There were no reports of any injuries and the Liverpool Club coaches were able to continue with their journey.

"An investigation has now been launched by Greater Manchester Police to identify and locate the offenders."

City ensured they kept pace with Arsenal in the Premier League title race with the hammering of Liverpool on Saturday. Julian Alvarez equalised 10 minutes after Salah's opener to get the hosts on level terms.

Kevin De Bruyne then scored early into the second-half to give the hosts the lead, before Ilkay Gundogan made it 3-1. Jack Grealish then capped off a superb performance to seal the win 15 minutes from time.
