The transfer window will slam shut on January 31st and so far Liverpool have managed to strengthen their squad with one signing as they aim to address a difficult season.
Cody Gakpo's arrival from PSV Eindhoven for a fee which is set to cost the Reds around £40m represents a smart piece of business by Jurgen Klopp.
Liverpool continue to be linked with a range of targets - especially in central midfield - and having spoken to a range of sources close to proceedings here's the lowdown on the major names in the frame.
Jude Bellingham (Borussia Dortmund)
By now, it's an open secret that Liverpool have a serious interest in Bellingham. At the age of just 19, the England international could be a star of the Premier League for the best part of the next 15 years, should he move back to his homeland this summer.
The Reds will be one of those vying for his signature and given Jurgen Klopp's links to Dortmund and the teenager's burgeoning friendship with Jordan Henderson and Trent Alexander-Arnold, those inside the club feel are at least some intangibles to work with, even if the crowded field for his signature will be intense. The cost of such a highly-rated youngster, however, will likely be enough to set a new club-record and Champions League football will likely be needed to aid that.
Matheus Nunes (Wolves)
One who Liverpool looked at last summer before the Brazil-born Portugal international moved from Sporting Lisbon to Wolves. The club's recruitment department have continued to keep watch over his development in the Black Country
As I wrote recently, Liverpool have a serious interest in the midfielder but cannot sign him this month given he has already turned out for two other teams this season. Senior figures at Liverpool enjoy a good relationship with Nunes' Gestifute agency and strong links have been forged between the two organisations in recent years. One for the summer then, perhaps. A strong second-half of the campaign at Molineux could see the Reds make their move.

Moises Caicedo (Brighton)
One of the emerging stars of the Premier League, Ecuador international Moises Caicedo has been earning rave reviews at Brighton this season. I saw first hand how he took Liverpool's midfield to task all on his own in the recent 3-0 victory at the Amex and Chelsea have been strongly linked since that game, with reports of a £55m bid being rejected. "If there are some bigger teams and they want our player and it's good news for us," said Brighton boss Roberto de Zerbi last Friday.
"The best solution is he can finish the season with us and then in the summer, for him, it's better to change team. If Caicedo will continue to play like the last games it's possible he can leave for another team." At the age of 21, Caicedo would be a serious long-term investment for a club higher up the food chain and given Liverpool are likely to need more than just one midfielder. He is someone they have assessed at some point.
Enzo Fernandez (Benfica)
Liverpool are on healthy terms with Benfica, in particular sporting director Julian Ward and his counterpart in Portugal, Rui Costa, but a move for for the Argentina World Cup winner has been definitively ruled out by Anfield insiders. Benfica have been in talks with Chelsea over Fernandez but appear no closer to a resolution with the Portuguese side reportedly demanding in excess of £100m for the player.

Sofyan Amrabat (Fiorentina)
Claims that Jurgen Klopp met with Sofyan Amrabat's agent, which came out during the World Cup, are said to have been inaccurate and it is perhaps no surprise that transfer speculation in the Fiorentina man has subsided since the Qatar tournament ended before Christmas.
Amrabat was not a player who had been mentioned too frequently on the Liverpool transfer rumour mill prior to an excellent World Cup for Morocco and the Reds' recruitment department would almost certainly not sanction a move for a player on the back of a handful of emotionally-charged performances for his nation in Qatar. Fiorentina are said to be asking for around £40m.
