Liverpool star Darwin Nunez overcomes 'injury scare' during Uruguay training session

Uruguay and Liverpool can seemingly breath a sigh of relief after a brief scare regarding the fitness of Darwin Nunez.

The Reds striker is currently away with his national team for the World Cup in Qatar. Their first match sees the two-times winners take on South Korea in the group stage on Thursday afternoon.

Nunez is one of seven Liverpool players who have made the trip to the Middle East for the competition for their respective countries. He joins Trent Alexander-Arnold, Jordan Henderson, Ibrahima Konate, Virgil Van Dijk, Alisson Becker and Fabinho in Qatar.

However, on Monday evening a report was published by Uruguayan news outlet El Pais which claimed that Nunez had suffered a brief injury scare during training.

It had been claimed that the 23-year-old had an ankle concern, before needing to be assessed by a medical expert for further evaluation.

The same report quickly stated, though, that after being assessed Nunez was able to return to the training session with the rest of the squad. “The alarms went off at a certain moment because Darwin Nunez withdrew from the court with his ankle, but after a medical examination he was able to return with the rest of his teammates,” the article read.

Nunez was forced to miss the Premier League defeat to Nottingham Forest last month due to a hamstring problem.

But he recovered quickly, and the injury only kept him on the sidelines for the one Liverpool match. Since signing from Benfica in the summer, Nunez has nine goals to his name in 18 Reds appearances.
