Liverpool star Darwin Nunez issues emotional apology after Uruguay World Cup exit

Liverpool star Darwin Nunez has issued an apology after Uruguay exited the 2022 World Cup.

The Reds striker was in action for his country on Friday night as Uruguay faced Ghana in their final group match in Qatar. Nunez’ s side claimed a 2-0 win, but still exited the competition.

South Korea’s dramatic win over Portugal in the other group match meant that Uruguay were knocked out of the World Cup. It means that Nunez will return to Liverpool’s squad earlier than his other team-mates, with the remaining six progressing to the last-16 with their respective countries.

Nunez was substituted in the second half of the game against Ghana when Uruguay, at the time, were progressing to the last-16. But by the full-time whistle, news had reached the Liverpool striker and his team-mates of South Korea’s goal which ended up knocking them out of the World Cup.

A day after the disappointment of his country being knocked out of the competition, Nunez has sent a message to Uruguay fans apologising for the manner of their exit.

“We didn't deserve this ending but the dream ended,” wrote Nunez, on Twitter.

“Sorry to all the Uruguayan people.”
