Liverpool secure long-term future of striker as six other Reds recognised for performances

Your morning Liverpool headlines on Saturday, August 13.

Liverpool agree long-term deal with 41-goal striker as significant progress rewarded

Liverpool striker Oakley Cannonier has agreed a new long-term contract with the club, rewarding the exceptional progress being made by the youngster at Academy level.

Cannonier scored 41 goals in all competitions last season, predominantly representing Marc Bridge-Wilkinson's under-18s side. The 18-year-old has since made the jump up to Barry Lewtas' under-21s group for the current season, having proven his quality was a cut above the lower age category.

Although not involved in the Reds' pre-season tour of the Far East this summer, despite the likes of fellow U18s stars of last season Melkamu Frauendorf and Stefan Bajcetic travelling with the team, the teenager trained with the first-team ahead of Liverpool's penultimate home fixture of last season against Tottenham Hotspur.

Mohamed Salah among six Liverpool nominees for Ballon d'Or as huge name misses out

Liverpool stars Mohamed Salah, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Virgil van Dijk, Fabinho, Darwin Nunez and Luis Diaz have been nominated for the 2022 Ballon d'Or.

The shortlists for various awards were revealed on Friday evening and the Egyptian has made 30-man list for the Ballon d'Or once again. He only finished seventh in the standings for the 2021 prize, but was the only Liverpool player nominated last year.

This year, he's joined by a number of his Anfield teammates. Alexander-Arnold has made the cut for a second time and Diaz has earned his first ever nomination for the prize. Midfielder Fabinho and striker Nunez have also been named on the shortlist for the first time, while Van Dijk earns his second nomination.

This year's favourite is Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema as he won the Champions League, La Liga, UEFA Nations League & Supercopa de Espana last season. Former Red Sadio Mane is also among the top contenders after he won the Africa Cup of Nations, secured World Cup qualification with Senegal and reached the Champions League final with Liverpool.
