Caoimhin Kelleher will hold discussions around his Liverpool future after this block of internationals, with the goalkeeper admitting that he is "not sure" if he will be moving on from Anfield to play regularly next season.
The 23-year-old, who is under contract until the summer of 2026, secured his place in club history when converting the decisive kick in the penalty shootout to win February’s Carabao Cup final but he made just two league appearances as Alisson Becker’s deputy.
Jurgen Klopp has previously described the Republic of Ireland international as the world’s best second-choice but after seven years at the club the time may have arrived for him to be playing every week.
“I’m not sure what’s happening yet," Kelleher said. "I’m still finishing this season and then we will have conversations after that to see what happens. I’m not sure yet. Obviously I need to play these few games and see what happens with these and maybe decide after that.”
Kelleher was speaking ahead of Ireland's Nations League game against Ukraine, a fixture which represents another chance to strengthen his grip on the nation’s No1 shirt. Gavin Bazunu, the Manchester City goalkeeper who excelled on loan at Portsmouth this season, had been Stephen Kenny’s first choice but has been ruled out of this international window owing to a back injury.
Ireland lost 1-0 away to Armenia on Saturday. After facing Ukraine in Dublin on Tuesday, they host Scotland at the weekend before then travelling to Lodz in Poland for the reverse fixture against Ukraine.
"To play the last few [internationals] has been really good for me, it’s great to get games in at international level," Kelleher said. "It’s a very high level and it’s really good for my development.
"I don’t know what’s going to happen at club level obviously but if you keep performing when you get the chance, hopefully I can stay in and keep hold of the jersey.”
Asked about the Carabao Cup win, he said that being such an integral part of a trophy win has made him more hungry. “It was a special moment for me. To win a cup with such a big club like Liverpool was obviously a great moment.
"When you do it once, you kind of want to do it again and again, and get that feeling again. It’s given me great motivation to try to do it again and get those experiences again.”
