Liverpool restaurant named winner at British Curry Awards 2022

A Liverpool venue has been named amongst the top UK curry restaurants after winning a British Curry Award.

The nation's best curry houses were voted for by the British public and the winners announced at a ceremony in London last night. Mowgli Street Food Liverpool was named the Best Restaurant in the North West at the British Curry Awards, which was attended by celebrities and TV personalities.

Mowgli was started by former barrister Nisha Katona, who opened her first restaurant on Liverpool's Bold Street in 2014. Her second Liverpool restaurant opened on Water Street in 2016 and over the years Mowgli has expanded to cities across the UK including Manchester, Birmingham, Oxford, Nottingham, Leicester, Leeds and more.

Reacting to the win on Instagram, the Mowgli owner said: “Winners at the British Curry Awards last night - So proud of my team of Operations Chefs and Supertasters who represented our Liverpool born endeavour last night.

“They trek the country tirelessly making sure Mowgli stays true to my Indian home kitchen roots. We can never be everyone's cup of tea and we are only as good as our last home spun curry. But this array of progressively blurred and happy faces care so much about your experience. So CONGRATULATIONS to all my Mowgli chefs who are at our hobs at dawn cooking their noble hearts out-this is for you”.

This year’s British Curry Awards paid tribute to the late Enam Ali MBE, the event’s founder who worked tirelessly to promote the curry industry globally for over 45 years. In a video message of support towards the event, Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak said, “The thing I’ve learnt about being Prime Minister is that the best training I ever had was working in a curry house. I know how hard every one of you works from the chefs to the waiters to the restaurant managers and the delivery drivers.

"And that experience gave me a huge appreciation of business, of the importance of treating people fairly and the value of this most iconic of British Asian industries. So I’m delighted to be supporting Britain’s ‘Curry Oscars’. I want to thank all of you for everything you do to fill our high streets and our homes with some of the best curry in the world.”
