Liverpool receive FSG sale boost but Darwin Nunez suffers World Cup setback

Your Liverpool morning headlines on Tuesday, November 29.

Paris Saint-Germain hand Liverpool and FSG £3.5bn sale boost

With Liverpool and Manchester United on the market and the likes of Chelsea and AC Milan already having changed ownership in 2022, another major European name are assessing their options.

Stopping short of a full sale, Qatar Sports Investments (QSI), the owners of Paris Saint-Germain, who have been willing to underwrite major losses in pursuit of placing the French club at the summit of world football, are on the lookout for fresh capital.

Liverpool and Manchester United, while both open to minority investment, have both pushed the door ajar to welcome expressions of interest when it comes to a full takeover, with Fenway Sports Group at Liverpool understood, according to well-placed sources in the US, to have placed a $4bn (£3.4bn) valuation on the club, while Manchester United's owners, the Glazer family, have been reportedly looking for closer to £6bn.

QSI, who have owned PSG since 2011, the club's ownership fronted by Nasser Al-Khelaifi, are a subsidiary of Qatar's sovereign wealth fund, the Qatar Investment Authority, with revenues generated from QSI investments reinvested into Qatar's sport, leisure and entertainment sectors, the country where this year's World Cup takes place currently.

Ally McCoist fumes as Portugal penalty leaves Darwin Nunez World Cup hopes in doubt

Ally McCoist was left fuming after Portugal were awarded a penalty that all but secured victory over Uruguay and left Darwin Nunez's World Cup hopes hanging by a thread.

The Liverpool striker's side lost 2-0 in their second game at the Lusail Stadium thanks to a brace from Manchester United midfielder Bruno Fernandes - the second of which came from a controversial penalty in added-time. Fernandes slid the ball through the sliding legs of Jose Gimenez, whose arm came down to land and made contact with the ball. Iranian referee Alireza Faghani was sent to the monitor to review his decision and ended up awarding a penalty for handball.

Red Devils talisman Fernandes stepped up to convert the penalty and secure the win, leaving Nunez and Uruguay bottom of the table with just one point - they are now two points off Ghana, who they face in the final round on Friday. And speaking during commentary of the match, McCoist fumed at the decision, following former referee Peter Walton's attempted justification.
