Liverpool player ratings as Mohamed Salah and Alisson excellent against Newcastle

Alisson Becker 9

Excellent save from Almiron in opening moments and then turned Saint-Maximin shot on to crossbar. Pass to Salah brought about red card for Pope and denied Wilson late on.

Trent Alexander-Arnold 8

Superb pass sent Nunez away for the opener and deliveries from wide caused Newcastle plenty of problems. Impressive.

Joe Gomez 7

One hesitation dealing with Saint-Maximin aside, solid enough showing built on his display against Everton.

Virgil van Dijk 8

Clear signs of ring-rust early on but soon made a succession of important clearances and excellent in the second half as Newcastle probed.

Andy Robertson 7

Kept busy defensively by Newcastle’s pressure first half but still able to offer himself going forward. Enjoyed second half.

Fabinho 7

Exposed at times by the pace of the home side but kept looking to plug the gaps and did well to negotiate the match after a first-half booking.

Jordan Henderson 6

Lacked composure on occasion before break when a decrease in tempo was required. Kept it simple second half. Subbed.

Stefan Bajcetic 7

Fine turn in midfield initiated the second goal but otherwise, like fellow midfielders, was largely on defensive before break. Better pressure second half. Subbed.

Mohamed Salah 8

Constantly harassed Burn on the deck, played in Gakpo superbly for second and drew the red card from Pope with a run in behind. Back to his dangerous best.

Cody Gakpo 7

Peripheral at times first half but cool finish for the second and forced save from Dubravka with header. Subbed.

Darwin Nunez 7

Took his goal brilliantly and growing understanding with Gakpo and Salah is clear. Forced good save from Dubravka second half. Subbed.

James Milner (for Bajcetic 59) 7

Immediately got stuck in against his former club.

Diogo Jota (for Gakpo 59) 7

Could have had a hat-trick in the last few minutes.

Roberto Firmino (for Nunez 59) 6

A few too many unnecessary flicks as he continues to find his range.

Harvey Elliott (for Henderson 59) 6

Another appearance for the youngster.
