Liverpool are facing a near-impossible pathway into the Champions League next season after watching Newcastle United cement their top-four position despite a stalemate with relegation-threatened Leicester City.
In a game that held significance at both ends in the Premier League standings, Newcastle struck the frame as many as three times throughout the 90 minutes. However, they were unable to find a winner as Callum Wilson and Miguel Almiron crashed against the post, while Bruno Guimaraes also passed up a golden chance.
Newcastle were dominant throughout and would have been worthy winners. However, the point they did get from their 0-0 draw has rubber-stamped Champions League qualification in any case.

It means Liverpool have a hugely difficult route to join them. But it's not mathematically impossible for the Reds as they prepare to go toe-to-toe with Manchester United indirectly.
United are currently in fourth spot on 69 points from 36 games. Following the Newcastle match, it's now formally a two-way scrap between rivals United and Liverpool to join Manchester City, Arsenal and Newcastle in the marquee European competition next campaign.
In short, Liverpool now need to win on the final day against Southampton and then hope United are beaten in their last two matches against Chelsea on Thursday night and Fulham on Sunday afternoon.
Goal difference would not be a concern as Liverpool's is far superior to United's.
United, though, boast home advantage at Old Trafford in their remaining two Premier League fixtures.
