Liverpool news: Virgil van Dijk captaincy questioned amid Jude Bellingham charm offensive

The latest international break has not been totally enjoyable for Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool squad, especially those part of the Netherlands squad.

The Oranje disappointed in their win over Gibraltar on Monday, having been smashed by France last Friday. That dreadful defeat has since led to Netherlands legend Marco van Basten taking aim at Liverpool vice captain Virgil van Dijk for 'creating chaos'.

That furious blast comes as Steven Gerrard opened up on a summer meeting he held with Liverpool boss Klopp and the Reds launched a charm offensive on transfer target Jude Bellingham. Here, Mirror Football rounds up the latest Liverpool news.

Van Dijk faces furious blast

Liverpool star Virgil van Dijk has been slammed for his performances for the Netherlands national team. Legendary attacker Marco van Basten took aim at the defender for his performance in the Oranje's defeat to France last week.

"He makes noise, but he doesn't say anything," Van Basten told Ziggo Sport. "He is not clear. A good captain thinks aloud, makes it clear what is going on. He stays in between. He creates chaos. That leads to misunderstandings.

"That is what you, as a captain, must prevent. In the dressing room he is good, football tactically and technically not. You need another gentleman on the field. This has nothing to do with that injury, this has to do with leadership. He makes noise, but he says nothing."

Steven Gerrard has opened up on an impromptu meeting he held with Jurgen Klopp ahead of the 2022 Champions League final. The duo shared several pints of beer after bumping into each other at a pub in Formby just before Liverpool's clash with Real Madrid in Paris.

"He was walking the dog, I was sitting outside with one of my friends having a couple of pints. I shouted over to wish him good luck, because he had a Champions League final days later. I thought he’d be in the zone," he told The Anfield Wrap.

"He said to me: 'No, no, no. Go the bar and get me a pint.' So we get him a pint. We had a good craic for probably over an hour. About football, about life in Liverpool, his plans for the future."

Henderson joins Bellingham charm offensive

Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson has joined the charm offensive aimed at transfer target Jude Bellingham. Club legend Steven Gerrard has already hailed the midfielder, with Henderson adding his own praise of his England team-mate.

“His potential is through the roof. Honestly, I can’t believe his age, how mature he plays, how mature he is off the pitch, in the gym, training, everything, recovery day after the game. He is just dedicated to football," he said.

“He is a really special player and I can't believe his mentality, how he applies himself to training and the games, everything. I’ve never seen it before so I'm pretty confident that he'll be a pretty good player for many years to come.”
