Liverpool news: Takumi Minamino transfer decision as Reds told to secure £50m forward

Liverpool have been able to negotiate what had the potential to be a testing January pretty well.

The Reds closed the gap on Manchester City in the title race last weekend and have found a way of thriving without Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane.

When those two do return, there's a chance there may be some tweaks to the Liverpool squad though, as speculation continues to linger about possible departures from Anfield.

Here are your latest Reds headlines, including an approach for one of the current first-team squad and suggestions that Liverpool should move for a possible Salah replacement.

Minamino approaches rejected

Liverpool have turned down approaches from Leeds United and Monaco for midfielder Takumi Minamino.

The Japan international has struggled for first-team football since arriving on Merseyside two years ago, although he has scored some important goals for the Reds when given opportunities, especially in the cup competitions.

It's said there is no appetite from the Reds to offload the 27-year-old despite his status in the squad, with Jurgen Klopp's side still in the hunt for silverware on four fronts.

Minamino did leave Liverpool on loan in January last year, joining Southampton.

Reds encouraged to make big move

Former Liverpool defender Jose Enrique has encouraged the team to pursue another high-calibre forward.

The Reds are still yet to sort a new contract for Salah, with his deal expiring at the end of next season.

Enrique said that with that in mind more reinforcements are required in the final third for Klopp, with the ex-left-back saying he is "worried" over Salah's situation.

"They still need someone else who can play in the front three similar to Jota, who’s scoring goals and doing well," he said.

"Profile-wise, Liverpool need another £40m or £50m kind of player to support the front three now. I’m sure if you ask any Liverpool fan they would say the same thing."

Haaland talks up Van Dijk

Borussia Dortmund sensation Erling Haaland has named Liverpool's Virgil van Dijk as the toughest opponent he has faced.

Haaland and Van Dijk came head-to-head in September when the Netherlands faced Norway. The striker managed to score one goal on that occasion in what was eventually a 1-1 draw.

Nevertheless, the Dutchman obviously made an impression on Haaland, who is set to be one of the most coveted players in world football this summer.

"You know how tall he is, how strong he is and how fast he is, and also the timing is crazy," he said. "I don't think I won one duel against him because he's a physical monster."
