Liverpool news: Jurgen Klopp unhappy with Tottenham after Kop stars crowded out

Liverpool suffered a setback in their push for the Premier League title on Saturday, as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Tottenham Hotspur at Anfield.

The Reds fell behind in the second half after Son Heung-min turned in from close range, although they did find parity after Luis Diaz's long-range strike took a huge deflection past Hugo Lloris.

The result means Jurgen Klopp's side go back to the top of the table, although Manchester City can pull clear with their game in hand on Sunday against Newcastle United.

Mirror Sport has the latest Liverpool headlines after a frustrating night in their pursuit of all four trophies.

Can Liverpool still win the title from this position? Let us know in the comments section below!

Klopp bemoans Spurs antics

Speaking after the game, Klopp was left unhappy with Tottenham's timewasting throughout the 90 minutes at Anfield.

Manager Antonio Conte had clearly set Spurs up to defend deep and frustrate the home crowd, which they did to great effect. In the end, the hosts needed a deflected shot to breach their back five.

It would appear Spurs got under Klopp's skin too, as he made reference to the gamesmanship after the final whistle.

"For all the praise for Tottenham, a world class opponent, they won against City – the game play works for these games but they are still fifth and for everything they were timewasting – it makes not easier, it’s smart but not easy."

Spurs crowd out Liverpool stars

The attacking trio of Diaz, Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah has been irresistible for Liverpool in recent weeks, but Spurs were able to find ways to limit their influence on Saturday night.

Although they sat deep for long spells, Tottenham were quick to spring into action when the aforementioned trio got on the ball, with Cristian Romero and Ben Davies outstanding in their defensive work.

While Diaz did score, he eventually had to come much deeper to receive the ball to have an impact.

"This strategy was effective even if it did leave gaps between the lines, although Jurgen Klopp will have been frustrated at how his side did not exploit these spaces," said Freddie Keighley in his assessment of the game. "The Reds perhaps missed the presence of Naby Keita in midfield, as the Guinean likes to drive with the ball at his feet."

Carvalho praised after Fulham farewell

Fabio Carvalho was given a ringing endorsement by Fulham manager Marco Silva after the youngster made his final appearance for the club on Saturday.

The midfielder has been a key part of the Fulham side that sauntered to Championship success this season, although the playmaker looks set to be plying his trade with Liverpool instead of the London club in 2022-23.

Silva lamented not being able to keep the 19-year-old around, but predicted he would have a bright future in the game.

"I think he (Carvalho) has a brilliant career in front of him. He is a top top talent in my opinion," said the former Everton manager.

"Unfortunately for me, I probably arrived a little bit late in this football club. With more time, he would have renewed his contract before. Definitely. It was a tough moment for us that we couldn't renew the contract before. And of course when a player that age starts to play the way he played week in, week out, doing very good performances every single match."
