Liverpool news: Jurgen Klopp explains Steven Gerrard U-turn amid key staff change decision

Liverpool's stuttering start to the Premier League season continued with another slip-up last Saturday when they fell to a surprise 1-0 defeat by Nottingham Forest.

The Reds now languish as low as eighth in the table, one place below newly-promoted Fulham who have a two-point advantage over Jurgen Klopp's men. The man in the Anfield hot-seat has cut an extremely frustrated figure at times this term as his side are still searching for their first away win of the campaign.

Liverpool have just won four overall and in turn find themselves five points adrift of Newcastle who currently occupy the much-coveted fourth spot. Klopp's men are a further 12 points behind league-leaders Arsenal.

Liverpool have the perfect chance to return to some kind of form when they welcome a struggling Leeds side to Anfield on Saturday night, but will have to devote their full attention to an away game at Ajax first.

Klopp's men take on the Dutch champions in Amsterdam on Wednesday knowing a defeat could end their hopes of finishing the Champions League group stage campaign as leaders.

Mirror Football has collated all of the main Reds talking points on Tuesday, October 25.

Klopp keen on staff change

Jurgen Klopp has had to deal with plenty of selection headaches as a result of the injuries piling up at Liverpool (PA)

The Liverpool boss is thought to be desperate for the club to fasten their search for a new doctor as the injuries continue to pile up.

Remarkably for a club of the Reds' stature, they have been without a chief doctor since Jim Moxon left his role in August of this year. Since then, what were once Moxon's duties have been divided between Academy doctor Bevin McCartan, club physician Sarah Lindsay and Andreas Schlumberger - the head of recovery and performance.

Liverpool's current crocked list makes for astonishing reading, with Luis Diaz, Joel Matip, Naby Keita, Ibrahima Konate, Darwin Nunez, Thiago Alcantara, Arthur Melo and Diogo Jota all carrying knocks just 11 games into the season.

According to the Liverpool ECHO, the club have not put a timescale on when they are aiming to make an appointment by but it is clearly a case of the sooner the better considering the toll the mounting injuries is having on their fortunes this season.

Reds boss explains Gerrard U-turn

Jurgen Klopp and Steven Gerrard appear to enjoy a stellar relationship (PA)

Klopp has made the surprise admission that Steven Gerrard was not always the top of his list when it came to players he'd have liked to have managed.

The pair are seemingly close pals nowadays, with Klopp telling reporters how he reached out to the former Liverpool midfielder in light of his sacking from his role as Aston Villa manager.

Years ago, when pressed on the player he'd most liked to have coached, Klopp told This is Anfield : "That's easy. It's Stevie.

The former Borussia Dortmund boss went on to recall the time he witnessed Gerrard's technical prowess in the flesh during a friendly match in pre-season, by which time the Reds legend had already called time on his playing career.

Klopp added: "Stevie and me together in the roles, he as the man on the pitch and me as a coach that would have been nice. So it's Stevie. Six years ago it would have been a different answer but now I'm here and I know him as a person and as a player so that's now an easy answer."

Salah blamed for Reds struggles

Mo Salah has scored nine goals so far this season yet has still been singled out for criticism by one former Red (Getty Images)

Despite being the main man on the red half of Merseyside ever since he arrived, Mohamed Salah has come under fire in recent weeks for his slow start to the campaign.

The latest figure to take a shot at the Egyptian is a former Liverpool star in Glen Johnson, who claimed that one of the main reasons for the Reds struggles this term as a collective was Salah's poor form.

Speaking to Midnite, the now 38-year-old said: “If you're only completing four passes in a game, then it's obviously personal.

“The formation doesn't make you give the ball away. Everyone is below par, Salah and the rest are fantastic players and they will find a way to get back to winning ways. A lot of them have been below par at the same time.

“When two or three big players are off-form, the rest can get the team out of trouble, but when it's the other way round, then you've got a problem.”
