Liverpool news: Jude Bellingham names Steven Gerrard as role model amid transfer links

The international break is nearly over, with Jurgen Klopp planning for Liverpool's game against Manchester City this coming Saturday.

The Reds travel to the Etihad in desperate need of a win to revive their hopes of qualifying for the Champions League. Liverpool are sixth in the Premier League table - seven points behind Tottenham in fourth with two games in hand. Newcastle sit in fifth.

Klopp knows Liverpool can't afford to lose too many games if they want to qualify for UEFA's primary club competition, yet he will also be thinking about entering the transfer market this summer. With that in mind, here are the latest headlines from Anfield.

Bellingham's love for Gerrard

Jude Bellingham told Steven Gerrard he "looked up to" him as a kid after England's victory against Ukraine on Sunday.

Bellingham, 19, is a transfer target for Liverpool, but the Reds face competition for his signature. Real Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain and Man City are also keen on the Borussia Dortmund midfielder, who is one of the best young players in Europe.

Bellingham spoke to Channel 4 after Sunday's game. He said, "The things that Stevie could do in terms of the teams he played in, the way he could carry a team, the way he could kind of single-handedly win a game, he could do everything as a midfielder.

"I’ve definitely said it multiple times I’ve looked up to you so it’s a pleasure to be stood here."

Gerrard responded, "Listen, let me tell you right now, you’re a lot further ahead than I was at your age, so you’re going in the right direction."

Adam explains new role

Ex-Liverpool midfielder Charlie Adam has explained his new role as Burnley's loan manager and a professional development phase coach for the U21s. The 2012 League Cup winner joined Burnley's coaching staff in October - a few months after hanging up his boots.

Adam told Mirror Football, "I oversee everything in terms of dealings with the other football club, getting the data in, speaking to the players, speaking to the managers, going to watch the players on the weekend and when they’re playing games in the week as well.

"It’s a busy time... meeting new people, new contacts, speaking to managers, speaking with agents who have players out on loan and telling them how they’re getting on. It’s been a great learning curve for me, in terms of going forward to eventually, hopefully, becoming a manager one day."

Gerrard's message to Celtic

Gerrard returned to Anfield on Saturday to play in a Liverpool legend's game against Celtic. The former Reds captain received a rough reception from the 4,000 travelling Celtic fans due to his three-year spell in charge of their bitter rivals Rangers.

Yet Gerrard silenced those Celtic supporters by scoring a penalty in front of them. He said, "There was only one taker from there and that's me, in front of the Celtic fans.

"A little bit of pressure, I waited for [the goalkeeper Artur Boruc] to go, and you have to milk it. I've had so much stick off them so they can have a bit back. There you go."

Yet Gerrard also thanked those Celtic fans who travelled from Glasgow. He added, "It [the fundraiser] wouldn't be so successful without the support of the fans, and to be fair to Celtic - they turned up in their numbers today. It's been a really enjoyable day."
