Liverpool are preparing to host familiar opponents Wolves at Anfield on Wednesday night in the Premier League.
Jurgen Klopp’s side have played Wolves three times in the past few months and will be looking for revenge after suffering a 3-0 defeat against Julen Lopetegui’s side in early February. The Reds are seventh in the Premier League, nine points off fourth-placed Tottenham after being held to a goalless draw by Crystal Palace on Saturday.
They desperately need to close the gap to the top four, with Champions League football crucial to the club on and off the pitch. With a major overhaul of the squad needed in the summer, Champions League qualification could be a key factor in attracting players.
With that in mind, here is the latest news from Liverpool.
Bellingham urged to join Man Utd
Jude Bellingham is Liverpool’s top transfer target for the summer window – but their current position could hinder their pursuit of the Borussia Dortmund midfielder.
The Reds are sure to face competition for the England star and, after their Carabao Cup final win, Louis Saha is convinced Manchester United would be a better fit for Bellingham.
“ Manchester United are showing an improvement that nobody can deny. Their style of play is very attractive, very effective and they’ve shown that they’re competing for trophies again," Saha told Betfred.
"They will challenge for the Champions League next season, that’s for sure. There’s grounds for a young talent like Jude Bellingham to sit in the midfield, really enjoy the game alongside Casemiro and learn a lot. This team is unbelievable to look at, at the moment.”
Reds publish financial results
Liverpool announced record revenues of £594million and a pre-tax profit of £7.5m on Tuesday.
The club have published their latest financial accounts, up to May 2022 and they showed just how important Champions League qualification is to the club. Almost 45 per cent of their revenue during the period came from TV money, which was boosted by their run to last season’s Champions League final.
Liverpool will have also received in the region of £100m in UEFA prize money. That shows just how perilous the position the club currently is – sitting seventh in the Premier League, nine points adrift of the top four, and staring at an exit from the Champions League after a 5-2 thrashing by Real Madrid in the first leg.
Salah goes against the grain
Monday saw the Best FIFA Awards ceremony take place in Paris. There was a Liverpool representative at the event, with skipper Virgil van Dijk rocking up in a green suit to pick up an award after being named in the FIFPRO World XI for 2022.
Mohamed Salah did not come close to glory, picking up just two votes to finish way down in 14th in the voting for the Best Men’s Player, which was won by Lionel Messi.
As Egypt captain Salah did get to vote and his selections raised some eyebrows. Salah selected Real Madrid winger Vinicius Jr at top of his order, with Manchester City midfielder Kevin De Bruyne second and PSG right-back Achraf Hakimi in third.
