Liverpool midfielder left 'drenched in meat and gravy' after rival fans pelted him with pies

Former Liverpool captain Jamie Redknapp has recalled how he was once hit on the head with two pies while watching an Everton game.

Redknapp signed for Liverpool from Bournemouth for £350,000 back in January 2015. Aged 17 at the time, the midfielder was the last signing of Sir Kenny Dalglish's first term as manager.

The now Sky Sports pundit would go on to spend 11 years at Anfield, before joining Tottenham Hotspur on a free transfer in April 2002. Redknapp made 308 appearances in all competitions, scoring 41 goals for the Reds.

However, the former England international learnt the hard way that life on Merseyside is very different to life on the South Coast.

“When I was a Bournemouth player, I’d gone to see Southampton with any issues,” the now 49-year-old told the Players Lounge. “So, I thought as a young Liverpool player I thought I could go and see Everton, too. Big mistake!

“I wore a baseball cap and hoped no one would spot me in the Goodison Road stand, but after 10 minutes I was hit on the head with a meat and potato pie and someone yelled, 'F**k off Redknapp'.

“To be honest, it was a fantastic shot - what precision, right on the side of the head! I got hit with another pie a few minutes later, so I just had to sit there drenched in gravy and meat. We left at half-time.”
