Liverpool 'made €100m offer for Real Madrid midfielder' before signing Arthur Melo

Liverpool ended up having a much busier end to the summer transfer window than they would have wanted.

The Reds moved to bring in Arthur Melo on loan from Juventus in the final hours of the window. The injury problems in midfield led to Liverpool changing their chance to sign a midfielder this summer.

Throughout the window, Liverpool were linked with a host of potential targets. Now a report from Spain has claimed that the Reds made a big-money bid before deciding to go for Arthur instead.

According to Spanish news outlet AS, via Madrid Universal , Liverpool made a bid for Real Madrid midfielder Federico Valverde within the final two days of the transfer window. It has been claimed that the offer was worth around €100million (£87m).

However, the report adds that Liverpool’s offer was swiftly rejected by Madrid, with the La Liga side now entertaining any offers for Valverde that late in the window. The Uruguay international was tentatively linked with Liverpool throughout the summer, but those rumours quietened as the window rolled on.

This isn’t the only report to credit Liverpool with making an offer for a player. According to Fabrizio Romano, RB Leipzig star Konrad Laimer was of interest to the Reds.

It has been claimed that Liverpool were “really interested” in signing the Austria international, but Leipzig made it impossible for the player to leave this window. Laimer’s current contract expires at the end of the season, with Bayern Munich showing an interest.
