Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard claims Aston Villa player 'attacked' during Man City title celebrations

Liverpool legend and Aston Villa boss Steven Gerrard has alleged that one of his players was “attacked” following their final league match of the season.

The Reds were locked in a battle with Manchester City for the Premier League title on the final day of the campaign. Liverpool claimed a 3-1 win over Wolves, but could not leapfrog City after their 3-2 win against Villa at the Etihad Stadium.

Despite goals from Sadio Mane, Mohamed Salah and Andy Robertson, Liverpool finished on 92 points and one adrift of the Man City in the table. Attention will now move swiftly to next week's Champions League final against Real Madrid in Paris.

After the full time whistle at the Etihad, City players and staff celebrated before fans flooded onto the pitch for further celebrations. However, Gerrard has said that one of his players was “attacked” during the pitch invasion by supporters.

Reserve goalkeeper and former Everton player Robin Olsen was seen holding his head before making his way down the tunnel. Gerrard was asked after the match if all of the Villa players made it off the pitch okay due to the pitch invasion.

"No is the answer to that,” replied Gerrard.

“My goalkeeper was attacked and I think them questions should go to Pep and Manchester City.

“We'll go and check if he's OK now."

Man City later confirmed the incident took place and launched an investigation to identify the person who did it.

A club statement read: "Manchester City would like to sincerely apologise to Aston Villa goalkeeper Robin Olsen, who was assaulted after the final whistle at today’s match when fans entered the pitch.

"The Club has launched an immediate investigation and once identified, the individual responsible will be issued with an indefinite stadium ban."
