Liverpool lad's next step after playing to thousands of Liverpool FC fans

A Walton-born musician is contemplating the next step in his career after performing in front of thousands of Liverpool fans at home and abroad.

Kieran Molyneux made his name performing at Boss Nights, the live shows which have become a symbol of the team’s resurgence under Jurgen Klopp. He releases his original music under the name Kieo.

The 30-year-old singer songwriter said he counts performing in front of 5,000 fans in Madrid on the eve of Liverpool’s Champions League victory in 2019 as the most memorable moment of his career. Speaking to the ECHO at the Olympia on West Derby Road where he has performed at on numerous occasions, Kieran said he achieved a childhood dream that day.

He said: “I had a dream when I was a kid of playing to a crowd I couldn’t see the end of. I’d watched clips of Oasis selling out Maine Road and dreamed of doing the same. When I walked out in Madrid, I couldn’t see the end of the crowd. It was an amazing show, topped off by Liverpool winning the European Cup that day. It will always live long in the memory.”

Kieran credited Boss Nights as a huge help to him releasing his own original music. They started as open mic nights in the city centre and have gone on tour Europe, Asia and the USA.

He added: “It’s a fantastic platform for bringing people who love music and football together. Now, making my own music that resonates with people is my next step. I’ve got singles coming out and am working on an album.”

Kieran argued his music is a personal endeavour, drawing on his personal experiences which others can relate to. He said: “I write for myself. And if I go on stage and just one person sings a lyric back to me, that’s my job done."

He added: “That’s why I don’t elaborate too much on what my songs are about. I want the audience to interpret it and make it their song.”

Kieran said his latest single typifies this approach. Entitled Happy To Lose My Mind, the theme of finding the positives in difficult situations is one that many can relate to.

He said: “We don’t often think about being happy in a sad situation. But there’s been times where we’ve been going through something and have been grateful to have someone close to us who can make us laugh. I’ll always write about something important to me. I’ll never write something just for the sake of it.”

Kieran has worked on Boss Nights with Jamie Webster. He said the success of him and others showcases the Liverpool music scene which is more than thriving.

He said: “In previous eras, Scousers have dominated one particular genre. Now, we’ve got metal bands on the front of Kerrang, Jamie headlining the Pier Head and a whole wealth of artists across the world. At this moment in time, Liverpool’s music scene is as good as ever.”

Despite Kieran’s promotion of his own work, his connection to his boyhood team remains as strong as ever. Last year, he published My First Liverpool Songs, an illustrated songbook of LFC chants for children.

Kieran said: “It’s getting harder for kids to get into Anfield. The aim of the book was to inspire them to love the club and when they do get to matches get them singing."

Developments such as this has given Kieran the chance to work with the club themselves. Last month, he worked with the LFC Foundation to surprise young fans through a special meet-up with first teamers Kostas Tsimikas, Adrian and Roberto Firmino.

However, Kieran is not concerned about being too closely with LFC. He said: “I’ve seen Oasis in Manchester City shirts and Sam Fender surrounded by Newcastle badges perform in front of thousands. If that was me, I’d come out on stage in my Liverpool shirt."

He added: “I’ll never hide my love for my team.”

Kieran’s latest single, Happy To Lose My Mind, is out today and is available to buy and stream on all major platforms.
