Liverpool hold 'really positive conversation' about re-entering cup competition as absence explained

The Liverpool County FA have confirmed that they have held a 'really positive conversation' with Liverpool about re-entering the Senior Cup.

The LCFA yesterday confirmed that the famous cup competition will return for the first time this season after the 2019/20 edition was curtailed as a result of the Covid pandemic. The competition was at the semi-final stage when it was curtailed.

Clubs from the North West Counties League, Northern Premier League, National League North, Football League and Premier League have all been confirmed as taking part in this season’s competition. In total, 19 teams are set to feature.

However, despite both Everton and Tranmere Rovers being represented, Liverpool have once again opted against taking part. The Reds have not featured in the competition for 12 years.

The last time the Anfield club were represented in the competition, they picked up the famous trophy for a second successive season. After lifting the Senior Cup at the Marine Travel Arena following a 1-0 win over Waterloo Dock, the Reds retained the trophy a year later when they beat Skelmersdale United 3-2 at Stormy Corner at the end of the 2009/10 season.

But since then Liverpool have opted against fielding a side in the competition. However, the LCFA have now confirmed that a conversation has been held with the Anfield club about them re-entering next season, with their commitments in Europe this season the reason behind them not re-entering this time round.

“We had a really positive conversation with LFC last week, they have too much commitments with regards to European games with younger players this season but are hoping to sort something next season,” a tweet from the LCFA’s official account read.

The LCFA have also confirmed that the format of the competition, rules and draw will be revealed next week. Southpoart are the reigning champions, while Runcorn Linnets will enter the competition for the first time this season.
