Liverpool hero Caoimhin Kelleher sent clear transfer message after impressive rise

Liverpool goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher has been told he could go and become the main man away from his current club if he decided to leave Anfield.

Kelleher put in a fine performance against Chelsea in the Carabao Cup final after Jurgen Klopp gave the 23-year-old a starting spot.

The Irishman proved pivotal, making fine saves against Christian Pulisic and Romelu Lukaku as the final at Wembley went to penalties.

And the stopper ended up the hero after his penalty turned out to be the winning one after his counterpart Kept Arrizabalaga skied his effort.

That is the first of four trophies Liverpool are hoping to lift this season while Alisson is set to be reinstated for the bigger prizes such as the Premier League and the Champions League.

But former Reds goalie David James reckons that Kelleher could go and make a name for himself somewhere else.

"It's an interesting dynamic, and it's something that I've been noticing a lot more in the last year or two, the rotation of squads," he told Sky Sports.

" Manchester City and Liverpool are the two teams that seem to do it more than anyone else, and how players are satisfied with not playing every week.

"Kelleher, he's proved himself as a very, very capable goalkeeper.

“Also, when Alisson signs a new five-year deal, you ask the question 'are you planning on being Liverpool's next no. 1 or is this just a stepping stone?'.

"I think at the moment, obviously he's getting a lot of rave reviews, he can get away with not having to play every week.

“But there will come a point where Liverpool will have to make a decision, or Kelleher has to make a decision, 'am I going to be a no. 1 somewhere else or am I going to stay at this massive club winning trophies and just playing my part in cup matches?'

James was then asked what he would do in Kelleher’s position, to which he added: "I would leave.

“I couldn't help myself, I just wanted to play all the time. Leaving Liverpool is a big decision to make, especially for someone like Kelleher."

Liverpool boss Klopp was full of praise for Kelleher after his display against Chelsea and admitted he had to give the player a chance.

He said: “Even in professional football there should be space for some sentiment. Caoimhin Kelleher is a young boy, plays in all the competition, what do I do? I am two things, a professional manager and a human being and the human being won. He deserves it.

"At the training centre we have a wall that all goalkeepers are on who won something and Caoimhin can go on it - that's how it should be - absolutely great.

"I am happy for the people to celebrate something like this. Chelsea are incredibly strong, we matched each other.

"That is the start, we are not silly. We need to have luck - we had luck, that could have been 5-5."
