Gareth Southgate gives Jordan Henderson England fitness update ahead of Man City v Liverpool

England boss Gareth Southgate has confirmed Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson has returned to training ahead of the Euro 2024 qualifier against Ukraine on Sunday.

Henderson played no part in England's 2-1 triumph at Italy on Thursday night due to the illness that ruled the 74-capped midfielder out of Liverpool's Champions League round-of-16 second-leg clash at Real Madrid on March 15.

But he could come into contention for the visit of Ukraine to Wembley after Southgate revealed one of his key lieutenants is "good to go."

That is also good news for Liverpool with the trip to defending champions Manchester City now just seven days away.

Southgate said: "He hadn't trained a lot the previous week, he'd had an illness, which was the reason he missed Liverpool's game the week before, so he was a little bit undercooked for that."

Virgil van Dijk questions team-mates after Kylian Mbappe nightmare

Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk believes his Netherlands side took a 'big hit' in their 4-0 to France.

The Netherlands were hammered at the Stade de France as they began their Euro 2024 qualifying campaign in the worst possible fashion. The match was Ronald Koeman's first in his second spell as Dutch boss.

It was an evening which saw Kylian Mbappe prove his class once again, scoring two of his team's goals with Antoine Griezmann and Dayot Upamecano completing the rout. Fellow Reds defender Ibrahima Konate completed the full 90 minutes for Didier Deschamps’ side.

Holland’s preparation for the game was undoubtedly less than ideal after five players, including Cody Gakpo, were sent home due to a flu virus, but the result was still a disappointing one for Van Dijk, who admitted post-match that a poor start gave his side a mountain to climb.

He said: “If you are 2-0 down after seven minutes, it will be a hell of a job. It's very bad how we start here. Then you'll be chasing the facts all evening."
