Liverpool great Xabi Alonso could be offered major European manager job

Bayer Leverkusen are ‘considering’ whether to sack Gerardo Seoane and replace him with former Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso, according to ESPN.

The German club face Porto in the Champions League tonight, but while Seoane will be in charge for that, his position is under threat after a woeful start to the Bundesliga season sees Leverkusen second-bottom with five points from eight games.

Alonso has been out of work since leaving Real Sociedad B - where he enjoyed a successful three-season spell - in May. The former Spanish international rolled back the years in a recent midfield performance in Liverpool Legends’ 2-1 win against Manchester United Legends at Anfield in September.

Since retiring in 2017, the 40-year-old has taken up a couple of different coaching roles, firstly within the academy set up at Real Madrid before moving to Sociedad’s B team in 2019 - where he took the Basque outfit to the Spanish second division for the first time in 60 years.

The former Liverpool, Madrid and Bayern Munich man is widely regarded as one of the most promising former players to come into the coaching scene over recent years, with a shot at managing first-team football the next natural step in his development.

Leverkusen have reportedly approached Thomas Tuchel after he was sacked by Chelsea just weeks ago, although it's said that the German has turned down the offer.
