Liverpool fans can't believe xG stats after Real Madrid score five at Anfield

Liverpool supporters have been left shocked after the xG for their Champions League defeat to Real Madrid was revealed.

Despite racing into a 2-0 lead inside the opening 15 minutes at Anfield, thanks to goals from Darwin Nunez and Mohamed Salah, the Reds would ultimately end up losing the game 5-2.

Braces from Vinicius Jnr and Karim Benzema, plus a Eder Militao header, turned the tie on its head. The result means Liverpool are going to need one of their famous European comebacks, maybe their greatest one ever, in 22 days at the Bernabeu.

IAN DOYLE: Real Madrid have just exposed Liverpool's greatest Champions League concern

They need to win by three goals to force extra time, or 4-0 to win it in 90 minutes. However, according to the xG stats, an abbreviation which stands for 'expected goals', Liverpool should have won the game.

The outcome was 2.09 to 1.66 in favour of the Reds - and it is safe to say that Liverpool fans have been left amazed by what has been revealed.

Speaking after the game, Real forward Karim Benzema said: "We played with personality, we produced goals - we want this Champions League again. And that produced a match which was lovely to play in and for those who were watching.

"We started a little poorly. We knew that the Anfield fans were going to put us under pressure but after those first 15 minutes we saw the true Real Madrid. Football at this level is hard. They started better than us but this was a big game and we were ready.

"When you know it's a vital game and you're 2-0 down you want more. A goal can change any game and that's what happened from Vinicius Junior today."
