Liverpool 'face' €50m Matheus Nunes transfer battle after 'rejecting' Raheem Sterling return

Liverpool have completed the first stage of their pre-season preparations as the tour of the Far East is now over. A 4-0 loss to Manchester United took place in Thailand before the Reds later flew to Singapore to beat Crystal Palace 2-0.

New signings Darwin Nunez and Fabio Carvalho have had their first taste of what it's like to be a Liverpool player with the adoring fans in Asia chanting their names. But Calvin Ramsay will have to wait a little longer to make his bow for the club after picking up an injury.

After those three arrivals, Reds boss Jurgen Klopp has ruled out more incomings as his squad prepares to fly out to Austria for the latest leg of pre-season. But anything can happen in football - especially with how fast and well Liverpool move in the market - so here are your latest transfer rumours from around the world.

What?

Liverpool have been linked with a move for Sporting CP midfielder Matheus Nunes all summer. He's someone Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola called "one of the best players in the world today" last season.

But if the Reds are to follow up their supposed interest then they are going to face competition from Premier League rivals. As this latest report suggests that Wolves, as well as Chelsea, remain interested in Nunes, who is said to have a €50m price tag.

The 23-year-old would seemingly fit in seamlessly into Jurgen Klopp's midfield three as he is capable of playing as an eight or a six. But the ECHO has been informed that no further midfield additions will be made this summer.

What?

Liverpool reportedly had the chance to re-sign Raheem Sterling from Manchester City this summer, according to a new report. The England international has now secured a £47m transfer to Chelsea.

Sterling made 129 appearance for Liverpool before leaving in a controversial £49m deal to City in 2015. But according to journalist Jacque Talbot, the 27-year-old was keen on a return to Merseyside.

He claimed: “We heard from reliable sources that Sterling actually wanted to go to Liverpool before making the move for Chelsea. I don’t think Manchester United were a consideration, but what I heard is that in essence, Liverpool rejected him.”

What?

The report suggests that Liverpool are accelerating talks with Diogo Jota over a new contract to extend his stay at Anfield.

Since arriving from Wolves in the summer of 2020, Jota has impressed massively with his improvement and his ability to score goals in and around the box. His current deal expires in 2025, but the Reds are keen to tie him down for longer.

Journalist Ben Jacobs said: “Liverpool will also look to offer Diogo Jota improved terms as a matter of priority. Most of the other names currently being linked with Liverpool are just rumour or agent talk with little substance.”
