Liverpool could be set for major transfer boost after Man City charges

The public insistence from Liverpool will be that it is none of their business, but it would be only natural for them to have cast some curious glances over at Manchester City's plight this week.

City, who have directly beaten Liverpool to three of the last five Premier League titles, were charged with over 100 alleged breaches of financial regulations on Monday and are now entering something of an unprecedented period in top-level English football.

The investigation, which started in December 2018 after German website Der Spiegel published documents that were initially leaked by Portuguese computer hacker Rui Pinto, will now be sent to a commission, who will be appointed by the independent Chair of the Premier League Judicial Panel, in accordance with the division's rules.

It's alleged that City have overstated sponsorship, privately increased salaries of key figures and broken rules over how approaches to young players are allowed to be made and the potential punishments could reportedly range from significant fines, points deductions and even expulsion from the league entirely.

"The club welcomes the review of this matter by an independent commission, to impartially consider the comprehensive body of irrefutable evidence that exists in support of its position. As such we look forward to this matter being put to rest once and for all," was City's response to the matter on Monday.

Talk of stripping them of their titles, retrospectively, also holds an interest for Liverpool, who could potentially gain from such a shocking development. But while the issue awaits a resolution - one which is not expected imminently, it must be stressed - there is at least the air of uncertainty around the Etihad that those at Anfield could benefit from.

City, who currently trail league leaders Arsenal by five points, have generally struggled from some of the same issues that have engulfed Jurgen Klopp and his own squad this season. After going flat out for the best past of a half-decade, there has been a significant drop-off from the Reds.

There is a school of thought that insists Liverpool's more obvious problems have masked City's to an extent. Four defeats this time out is already one more than they suffered throughout the entirety of last season and Pep Guardiola's team have not always looked at their fluent best for large swathes of the campaign.

"There’s still a long way to go but you’re almost waiting for Manchester City to kick in and to be the Man City we know so well," Jamie Carragher said on Sky Sports after Sunday's 1-0 loss at Tottenham.

"It just feels like this might be the season where they’re not quite themselves, for lots of different reasons. It’s not the Man City of old. This idea that they’re going to do what they’ve done to Liverpool a couple of times in the title race, I’m not sure it will happen. It feels like a different Manchester City that we’re watching right now."

While Liverpool's need to rebuild this summer might be more pronounced, there is a theory that Guardiola will need to do something similar. But could the general concerns at the Etihad be to the Reds' advantage this summer?

The futures of players like Bernardo Silva and Ilkay Gundogan remain in question. Silva has been linked with a move to Barcelona for the past few transfer windows, while German international Gundogan is 32 and out of contract at the end of the season. Joao Cancelo is another who could leave the club having joined Bayern Munich in somewhat of a surprise loan switch in the closing days of the January window.

Kyle Walker and Riyad Mahrez will be 33 and 32, respectively, before the end of May too meaning Guardiola, like Klopp, may be forced to make some major decisions around a handful of players who have been instrumental to the two clubs' successes in recent years.

With the charges levelled at City continuing to make daily news, it must surely present their transfer targets - like Liverpool-linked Jude Bellingham, for example - with something serious to consider when their long-term future comes to be decided. Would every player be content to simply ignore the accusations of widespread impropriety that stretches back years? At the very least it is a major point to ponder. Some may feel it is not worth shunning a move to the Etihad for. Others, however, may believe it is.

It could be a situation that sees Liverpool gain from this summer, indirectly or otherwise, as their own rebuild gets set to be ramped up.
