Liverpool chairman Tom Werner sends Roberto Firmino message as exit looms

Liverpool chairman Tom Werner has paid tribute to Roberto Firmino as the curtain comes down on his Anfield career.

It emerged earlier this year the Brazilian would be seeking pastures new at the end of the current campaign, bringing an end to his eight-year spell on Merseyside. Saturday afternoon's fixture with Aston Villa will represent Firmino's final home outing in a Reds shirt, as will also be the case for Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, James Milner and Naby Keita.

Serenaded by the travelling supporters during and after Monday's 3-0 away win at Leicester City, the 31-year-old is set to receive another special reception this weekend as he bids farewell to his adoring fanbase.

People will be spoiled for choice when picking out Firmino's Liverpool highlights, having contributed to a number of memorable moments during his lengthy stay. Providing his taken on how the former Hoffenheim man will be best remembered, Werner told the Athletic: "In reflecting on Bobby and his impact at Liverpool, there are obviously countless goals, assists, and the off-the-ball work that showcased his world class football talents. But when I think of Bobby and his eight years with the club, I will most remember his smile – an infectious grin as wide as the Mersey and as bright as a sun-soaked day at Anfield.

"His play on the pitch was so imaginative," continued the Liverpool chairman. "He delivered more than 100 goals, and his leadership was unquestionably selfless. But he delighted us most with a smile that will forever be in a class of its own."
