Liverpool chairman Tom Werner reveals crucial chat with Todd Boehly ahead of Chelsea takeover

Liverpool chairman Tom Werner has revealed that Todd Boehly requested advice on the possibility of purchasing Chelsea Football Club. Boehly's consortium is expected to become the club's new ownership group after they were recently given the green light from the Premier League and the UK's Government.

Boehly was chosen as the club's preferred bidder last month, and ever since, it's been putting the final touches on what has been an extremely complicated process for all parties. Now, with approval from the Premier League and the Government, the American consortium is closer than ever to completing the takeover.

A statement from the Government read: "Following the sanctioning of Roman Abramovich, the Government has worked hard to ensure Chelsea has been able to continue to play football. But we have always been clear that the long-term future of the club could only be secured under a new owner.

"Following extensive work, we are now satisfied that the full proceeds of the sale will not benefit Roman Abramovich or any other sanctioned individual. We will now begin the process of ensuring the proceeds of the sale are used for humanitarian causes in Ukraine, supporting victims of the war.

"The steps today will secure the future of this important cultural asset and protect fans and the wider football community. We have been in discussions with relevant international partners for necessary licences required, and we thank them for all their cooperation."

Werner, who has been the chairman of Liverpool since 2010, knows a thing or two about switching America to the UK when it comes to running football clubs, and he has opened up on a conversation he recently had with Boehly. In an interview with The Athletic, Werner said: "I've had a couple of conversations with him [Boehly] in the last week.

"He was just picking my brain. I think he will be good for Chelsea. I know they are working right now on a stadium solution. I think he will prove to be an excellent owner."
