Liverpool buildings among North West’s best after awards haul

A number of Liverpool buildings and projects have scooped up prestigious awards.

Five of the city’s buildings were included on the regional shortlist for the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors awards (The RICS), with three going on to win top honours. The awards showcase the most inspirational initiatives and developments in land, real estate, construction and infrastructure - recognising outstanding achievement, teamwork and companies.

The categories included community benefit, commercial development, public sector, refurbishment/revitalisation, and heritage. India Buildings in Liverpool city centre came out on top in the refurbishment category having recently undergone a significant renovation to house a new Government hub with 4,000 employees.

The new Clatterbridge Cancer Centre on the edge of the city centre in Kensington scooped up the public sector project and forms one of the main buildings close to the new Royal Liverpool hospital.

The Old Library in Tuebrook was successful in the heritage award. The former Andrew Carnegie library closed in 2006 due to health and safety reasons and was left in a state of disrepair before critical works were carried out in a bid to see the structure saved.

The library reopened in 2020 and was redesigned by OMI architects and is now the permanent home of Lister Steps children's charity. Waterloo Dock warehouse and Stanley Dock Tobacco Warehouse were also shortlisted for awards back in April, but winners in the commercial development and community benefit categories went to entrants in Preston and Salford.

Peter Gilliland MRICS, Chair of the judging panel, said: “These winning projects are a true testament to the hard work of property professionals in the North West. The pandemic has led to the industry facing much uncertainty and challenging conditions, but we were delighted, and very proud, to see such innovative building projects appearing across our cities and towns.
