Live strike updates, bar staff step in as man stabbed and family hit hard by cost of living crisis

These are the latest Liverpool ECHO headlines this morning.

Live updates as nurses strike and walk out across Liverpool

We are live today as thousands of nurses across Liverpool walk out on strike on an historic first day of industrial action.

Nurses based at hospitals across the city - including the Royal, Aintree, Alder Hey and the Women's Hospital - will walk out and join picket lines as part of a major row about pay and patient safety.

It is the first time in the history of the Royal College of Nursing (RCN) that such strike action has been held. The RCN has repeated calls on the UK government to accept its request for negotiations to resolve the dispute over pay and patient safety. The union said the number of NHS employers affected by the action will increase in January unless fresh talks are held.

One Liverpool nurse, Carmel O'Boyle, explained why she and others had taken the decision to strike today. She said: "This was a horrendous decision to make and it is a decision that none of us wanted to take. I feel physically sick thinking about it, I can't believe the government has let it get this far. They could put a stop to this at any minute."

We will be reporting live from picket lines around the city today.

Bar staff step in and 'seize crowbar' as man stabbed in street brawl

Staff from a bar stepped in to help a man during an incident which saw another man stabbed.

Merseyside Police were called to Allerton Road in Woolton Village at around 1am on Saturday, November 26. A man in his 20s was found in the street with stab wounds to both legs, chest and his lower abdomen.

The man was taken to hospital for treatment for his injuries, which were not thought to be life-threatening. Three other men attended hospital with injuries.

Staff at Allerton Road bar The Loft told the ECHO that their security stepped in to ensure the incident, which they said involved two groups of men, did not get any worse. The bar's owner Engin Yilmaz, 54, said his security staff had to step in when one man ran towards their bar to look for safety.

Dad taking out loans to feed his kids and keep house warm

A family hit hard by the cost of living crisis say "everything is a luxury."

Ryan Pennington, from St Helens, found himself and his family struggling financially after he took time off work with ongoing health conditions and his hours were reduced from 40 a week to just 14. Ryan, 35, and his partner Joanna Sargent now find themselves struggling to keep their heads above water while caring for their two young children.

The 35-year-old claims he has had to take out loans to put food on the table, creating a vicious cycle of debt. Ryan told the ECHO: "It's just getting harder and harder, we're struggling to heat the place and put food on the table. Never mind luxuries, everything is a luxury."

He added: "We've had to take out some loans to keep food on the table and keep us all warm, which has put us in a worse position now as we're in a large amount of debt.

"This isn't just impacting our lives. It's impacting the quality of life that we should be able to provide for our kids, and this should not be happening."
