As it happened: Senegal beat Egypt on penalties to win first ever Africa Cup of Nations

The Senegal v Egypt final was still 0-0 at the end of extra time – but Senegal kept their cool to edge Egypt on penalties, capturing their first ever Africa Cup of Nations trophy.

It looked like favourites Senegal would go ahead early on and stay there when they edged Egypt on possession and talisman Sadio Mané got an early penalty – but the Egyptian goalkeeper Gabaski saved it and it was a goalless stalemate for the rest of the match.

Senegal attacked impressively but found it impossible to break through the Pharaohs' defence. Egypt showed some sparkle in the odd surge forward – notably when Mo Salah had the ball -- but it looked like they were playing for penalties. When it came to the showdown from the spot kick, Senegal kept their nerve, Egypt lost theirs – and that was that.
