Ukraine on Monday criticised Mongolia over its failure to arrest visiting Russian leader Vladimir Putin despite an international warrant, saying the move dealt a "heavy blow to the International Criminal Court". Earlier, Ukraine said Russian forces launched an overnight barrage of drones and cruise and ballistic missiles at Kyiv, causing multiple explosions in the Ukrainian capital and sending residents into bomb shelters. Summary:

  • Russia pounded Ukraine's capital of Kyiv with missiles early on Monday, while falling debris from the downed weapons injured at least two people, sparking fires and damaging homes and infrastructure, officials said
  • Polish and allied aircraft were activated early on Monday to ensure the safety of Polish airspace after Russia launched air strikes on Ukraine, the Operational Command of the Polish armed forces said. Poland said last week that its airspace had been violated by a Russian projectile during a similar barrage of attacks by Russia on Ukraine.
  • Russia's President Vladimir Putin said the Ukrainian army's surprise cross-border offensive in Kursk region had failed to stall Russia's advance in eastern Ukraine, claiming rapid gains for his troops in Donetsk region.
  • Ukraine said Mongolia's failure on Monday to arrest the Russian leader, wanted on an international warrant, dealt a "heavy blow" to the international criminal justice system.

Yesterday's key developments:

  • At least 47 people, including five children, were injured on Sunday after Russian missiles struck a shopping mall and events complex in Kharkiv, officials said.
  • Russia said that it had thwarted a "massive" Ukrainian drone attack by downing 158 drones across 15 regions, including two over the capital Moscow. Its defence ministry said most of the drones – 122 – were downed over the regions of Kursk, Bryansk, Voronezh and Belgorod, which border Ukraine. A coal-fired power plant near the city was reported hit, as was an oil refinery within the city boundaries.
  • Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky increased pressure on the United States to let Kyiv strike deeper into Russian territory after his representatives met senior US officials in Washington on Saturday.
  • A Russian guided bomb attack on Saturday killed two people and injured 10 more, including children, in a village in Ukraine’s Kharkiv region, the governor said.
