US slams 'cynical' ploy as Ukraine shelling continues despite Russian truce claim

The United States said reports of continued shelling in eastern Ukraine on Friday showed that a ceasefire announced by Russian President Vladimir Putin to coincide with Orthodox Christmas was merely a "cynical" ploy to gain time. Earlier, Washington announced a new military assistance package for Ukraine worth an estimated 3 billion dollars, including the delivery of Bradley armoured vehicles.
