LIV Golf unveils cringeworthy first TV advert as rebel series prepares for second season

LIV Golf has launched its first ever TV advert in a bid to ramp up interest in the second season of the contentious Saudi-backed breakaway series.

An expanded 14-event LIV calendar will get under way at Mayakoba in Mexico from February 24-26 and the campaign has been released on the eve of the series confirming its 2023 rosters.

The minute-long TV promo features a host of prominent LIV rebels and is designed to engage fans in the team concept that CEO Greg Norman has sold as his way of revolutionising golf.

But there are already mixed reviews amid a host of cringeworthy moments, including Sergio Garcia claiming he's in the best looking team and Henrik Stenson teasing Ian Poulter over his trouser selection.

The premise of the advert is 12 captains from the 48-man, invitational series persuading a young fan why she should support their team, often in a comedic manner.

Phil Mickelson, who became golf's unlikely pariah following his LIV move last year, stars in the advert, hitting a wedge shot close to the hole and turning to the camera and saying 'Right?'

Garcia, who jeopardised future Ryder Cup involvement in his LIV defection, heads the 'Fireballs' team and makes a bizarre comment about his side's appearance rather than on-course credentials.

"Woah, don't forget about the Fireballs," he says. They're the most passionate, best-looking guys in the league. Case closed."

Former Masters champions Bubba Watson (Range Goats) and Dustin Johnson (4 Aces) promote their teams, before Majesticks co-captains Stenson and Poulter are introduced.

Ryder Cup legend Poulter says 'everyone wants to wear' the Majesticks badge, before Stenson, who was stripped of the honour of captaining Europe to join LIV ,delivers the riposte: 'unlike those pants', in a light-hearted dig at his vibrant trousers.

Elsewhere, big-hitting Bryson DeChambeau boasts about his mammoth distance from the tee for the 'Crushers', while Brooks Koepka replicates his famous eye-roll towards his American rival.

And Open champion Cam Smith says 'drives are for show, putts are for dough', before the camera cuts back to the young fan, who remains undecided on her favourite team to the surprise of the LIV rebels.

LIV will play its 14 events across seven countries in 2023, which will include a return to its inaugural venue, the Centurion Club outside London, and a stop at the iconic Spanish course Valderrama.

And Norman's series will finally have a TV network to showcase its 54-hole events as the disruptive enterprise looks to establish itself as a serious rival to the PGA and DP World Tours.

LIV aired its first eight events on YouTube, but has now signed a multiyear contract with American broadcasters CW Network, who will have full access of their 14 events across 2023.
