Federal regulators announced a recall of about 590 youth clothing sets sold by Little Loves and Co. because the waist drawstrings can catch on objects and cause serious injury or death from entrapment. The Consumer Product Safety Commission notice covers daywear sets and boy shorts sets in sizes from 12 to 18 months through youth 9 and 10.
No injuries have been reported. That absence is typical of drawstring recalls and is also the reason many parents underestimate them. Cords on children's clothing are not treated as a hazard because of an injury count. They are treated as a hazard because of a mechanism that regulators documented decades ago: a cord snags on playground equipment, a bus door, or a car door, and the child cannot get free.
