In an atmosphere of deep emotion and powerful symbolism, the halls of the European Parliament have played host this week to a remarkable art exhibition entitled Golden Ribbon.
The colourful artworks were created by children receiving treatment at the Pediatric Oncology Unit of Makarios Hospital, bringing a resounding message of hope to the heart of European democracy.
The initiative was led by Loucas Fourlas, a member of the European Parliament, who organised the exhibition in collaboration with the “Little Heroes” Foundation, and the Pancyprian Association of Parents and Friends of the Pediatric Oncology Unit, to highlight the strength and resilience of children fighting their own health battles.
Golden Ribbon was dedicated to the memory of Iris Violari, adding even greater depth to the exhibition. The paintings, created by children’s hands, are not merely works of art; they were testimonies of courage and inner strength.
During the opening ceremony, Mr. Fourlas emphasized that although the works may be small in size, they carry immense emotional weight: “They tell stories without words. They speak of strength, of dreams, and of the incredible power that lies within every child. For the first time, these children’s voices are being heard at the heart of Europe.”
Visitors to the exhibition encountered more than colourful canvases. Behind them, they saw the faces of children fighting bravely. They recognised families standing steadfast in the face of adversity. They acknowledged the dedication of doctors and nurses who fight every day for each child’s health.
Through the works of Golden Ribbon the message is clear: even in the darkest moments, the light of creativity and hope remains unextinguished.
Also present at the opening was former European Commissioner for Health Stella Kyriakides, who, visibly moved, thanked Mr. Fourlas for his initiative. She commented that when she looks at the works of art, she sees imagination in addition to the colours on paper.
“This is the first time so much light has radiated through parliament. Remember, after the storm, the rainbow always appears—and the colours of the rainbow are reflected in the children’s drawings.”
Addressing the parents she said that "we will continue to fight together with Loucas what we started. To fight against cancer and help the families."
The teacher of the Paediatric Oncology Department, Eleni Anastasiou, who was present at the European Parliament, told the audience the exhibition will also have pride of place when it's held in Cyprus in May.
