Lisandro Martinez reacts to losing his place in Manchester United team

Manchester United defender Lisandro Martinez believes the competition for places in Erik ten Hag's team is a good thing.

United are currently in a rich vein of form and have not lost since the domestic season restarted just before Christmas. Since returning just before the end of the year, Martinez has not started for Erik ten Hag's team.

Before the World Cup, Martinez was a key component of the United starting XI. However, in a couple of recent fixtures, Luke Shaw has played at centre-back with Tyrell Malacia featuring at left back.

Despite being out of the team, Martinez has praised the competition there now is for a start. Speaking to Sky Sports, the 24-year-old said: "I like when there's competition for places, I think it's a positive.

"The vibe and the atmosphere in the dressing room is really positive and I'm proud we're on this good run. It shows we are on the right road and we are making progress.

"At the start of the season, we didn't have the best of couple of games, but we managed to turn things around and that makes you stronger. I think now, within the group, there's a different kind of energy and atmosphere.

"Training is even more lively than it's ever been. We can't drop our guard, but three wins and three clean sheets [in the Premier League] is something to build on."

Defence is not the only area where there is strong competition for United. In midfield, Fred and Scott McTominay are waiting in the wings thanks to the impressive form of Casemiro, Christian Eriksen and Bruno Fernandes.

The only position without much depth is at centre-forward. Since the departure of Cristiano Ronaldo in November, United have only Anthony Martial in the recognised striker role.

Ten Hag has already identified the forward position as a priority in the January transfer window.
