Lisa Kudrow Claims ‘Nobody Cared’ About Her On Friends: ‘I Was Called The Sixth Friend’

Actress and absolute star Lisa Kudrow has made a shocking claim regarding her time as Phoebe Buffay on the hit sitcom series Friends, revealing that “nobody cared about [her]” during the show’s run.

There’s no doubt that Friends — which ran from 1994 to 2004 — made a huge impact on pop culture. It’s birthed iconic reaction pics, the ladies are absolute style icons, and a lot of the dialogue is embedded in everyday life (PIVOT).

While many folks have enjoyed the show, Kudrow revealed to The Independent in a recent interview that she didn’t “experience much of a professional boost” from the show’s popularity.

“Nobody cared about me,” she told the publication.

“There were certain parts of [my talent agency] that just referred to me as ‘the sixth Friend’.”

While that is an incredibly sad claim on Kudrow’s part — adding that “there was no vision for me, and no expectations about the kind of career I could have. There was just like, ‘boy, is she lucky she got on that show.’”  — the Easy A star said that this attitude allowed her to pursue other projects beyond the sitcom.

Some of her career highlights included her minor role in Albert Brooks Mother and Clockwatchers.

Kudrow’s admission comes as a surprise, considering that she is the first actor from the Friends gang to win an Emmy, which she won in 1998 in the Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series category.

This isn’t the first time Kudrow has been candid about her time on Friends and playing the beloved blonde character we all know and love.

Speaking to Lily Tomlin for Interview Magazine last month, Kudrow said Phoebe was “very, very far from me”.

“It took a lot of work to justify the things she would say and do. Not in an irritating way — it was fun,” she revealed.

“Over the course of 10 years, a little bit of her came into me. I lightened up a little more and read some books on spirituality and things, just to try to understand her.”

Kudrow also admits that she never saw Phoebe as a “ditzy” character, despite how viewers perceived her.

“At the time, it was like, “She’s such a ditz. How is it that you only play ditzes?” And I thought, Is she a ditz? To me, she wasn’t,” Kudrow said.

Honestly, if I had to slot myself into a character from Friends, I would absolutely, 100 per cent, put myself next to Phoebe.

And while she was labelled the “sixth Friend”, I hope she knows that her performance represented a lot of free-spirited, happy-go-lucky girlies who might feel like the odd one out in their group. We <3 Phoebe and, most importantly, we <3 Kudrow!
