Lionsgate is set to take audiences back to the early 1990s this summer with the release of the crime thriller '1992.' Directed by Ariel Vromen, the film is scheduled to hit theaters on August 30th. The movie features a star-studded cast including Tyrese Gibson, Snoop Dogg, Scott Eastwood, and the late Ray Liotta in one of his final roles.
In '1992,' Gibson plays the character Mercer, who is trying to rebuild his life and mend his relationship with his son against the backdrop of the Los Angeles uprising following the Rodney King verdict. The plot thickens as Mercer finds himself entangled with a father-son duo, portrayed by Liotta and Eastwood, planning a heist at the factory where Mercer works.
The film was co-written by Vromen and Sascha Penn, with Vromen also serving as the director. Snoop Dogg, through his production company Death Row Pictures, has joined the project as an executive producer. This collaboration marks a reunion for Snoop Dogg and Gibson, who previously worked together on the 2001 drama 'Baby Boy.'
Snoop Dogg expressed his personal connection to the era, stating, '1992 was a life-changing time for me... This movie is about an L.A. moment.' Gibson, in turn, praised the late Ray Liotta for his exceptional performance in the film, calling it a blessing to have worked with him.
Lionsgate Motion Picture Group chair Adam Fogelson commended Gibson for his talent and dedication to the project, highlighting the infectious enthusiasm he brings to his work. Fogelson also acknowledged Snoop Dogg's deep connection to the material, making Death Row Pictures the ideal partner for the film.
'1992' promises to be a gripping heist movie that captures the essence of a pivotal moment in Los Angeles history. With a stellar cast and a compelling storyline, the film is poised to captivate audiences and transport them back to the tumultuous events of the early '90s.
