The Lions became the latest team to unveil a new alternate helmet on Wednesday and they did so in truly Detroit fashion.
The unveiling video started with a classic Ford Mustang pulling up to Ford Field with an unrevealed person driving. In the back seat, the Lions typical gray helmet can be seen. But the individual instead grabs his duffle bag, unveiling a metallic light blue helmet—the same color as the Mustang.
According to an accompanying graphic, this color has never been worn before in the NFL. The classic Lions symbol is also a nod to the team’s history as the Detroit franchise will be celebrating its 90th season in 2023.

The new helmet will only be worn with the team’s all-gray uniform, but it’s unclear when the team will don the new look. Before the official announcement, the Lions showed coach Dan Campbell, wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown and defensive end Aidan Hutchinson the helmets and it appears they were all big fans.
“I like it,” Campbell said. “That’s gon’ be pretty sharp.”
