Indianapolis Colts running backs coach Scottie Montgomery is expected to join the Detroit Lions coaching staff as the assistant head coach and running backs coach, according to Tom Pelissero of NFL Network.
Following the news that Duce Staley is expected to join Frank Reich’s staff with the Carolina Panthers, the Lions moved quickly to find his replacement. Montgomery has been the running backs coach for the Colts for the last two seasons.
The #Lions are hiring Scottie Montgomery as their Assistant Head Coach and he’ll coach the RBs, per source. Montgomery, who most recently was the #Colts RB coach, is a strong and respected veteran addition to Detroit’s staff who multiple teams have had interest in.

Montgomery took over the position in 2021 following the retirement of Tom Rathman. In Montgomery’s first season as the running backs coach, Jonathan Taylor led the NFL in rushing yards (1,811).
The Colts are still going through the process of finding a new head coach, one that could last through the conclusion of the Super Bowl. While it seems they are intent on keeping defensive coordinator Gus Bradley, this does offer the chance for other assistants to find new jobs.
It’s likely that whoever is the new head coach will bring along their own coaches for the majority of the spots on the staff, and finding a new running backs coach will be near the top of the list.
