Lions flex in AFL preseason Crows mauling

Darcy Wilmot made his first impression count in the hunt for a first-round AFL debut, impressing as a well-rounded Brisbane easily beat a depleted Adelaide in their preseason clash on the Gold Coast.

The Lions found open space in a six-major second quarter that opened the floodgates, 10 players kicking goals for Brisbane in a 21.12 (138) to 7-7 (49) win at Metricon Stadium on Friday.

Daniel McStay kicked his fourth goal on the full-time siren while Charlie Cameron, Joe Daniher and Jarrod Berry kicked three and impressive Crows draftee Josh Rachele also kicked three.

Wilmot, the Lions' top pick at 16 in the 2021 draft, moved smoothly at halfback as he looks to earn a spot in the premiership contenders' best 22 for their March 19 opener against Port Adelaide.

He'll likely have to wait his turn though, with Keidean Coleman (COVID-19 protocols) ahead in the pecking order but missing from Friday's rain-hit fixture.

Fit-again Cameron Rayner looked terrific as he started in the midfield, as did Brownlow Medallist Lachie Neale after an injury-interrupted 2021.

Noah Answerth kicked a goal as part of a busy return from a groin injury that kept him out of AFL action last year, while Jarryd Lyons was also heavily involved.

Bright spark Rachele was a standout in a Crows side featuring just five men with 50 or more AFL games under the belts, his third goal a booming effort from outside 50m that easily made the distance.

Paul Seedsman (concussion) and Taylor Walker (suspended) were notable omissions from Matthew Nicks' side, while COVID-19 protocols also kept Jordan Dawson, Brodie Smith and Rory Sloane at home.

Wayne Milera's long-awaited comeback was also delayed due to the virus restrictions but former All-Australian midfielder Matt Crouch had some classy touches in his first game in more than a year.

They kept pace with the Lions in the first term, Riley Thilthorpe kicking two goals and James Rowe threading the needle off his left foot from deep in the pocket.

The bigger-bodied Brisbane ran away in the second quarter though as Zac Bailey, Nakia Cockatoo and Lincoln McCarthy ensured the ball kept coming in.
