Lionel Messi's name was booed at Parc de Princes as he was announced among the Paris Saint-Germain starters to face Rennes.
The Argentina legend was signed by the Parisian side almost two years ago and it was hoped the arrival of one of the greatest players of all time would help them finally take the last step and win the Champions League. But it hasn't gone to plan and they were sent packing by Bayern Munich during the week meaning their agonising wait for European glory goes on.
Messi has found himself as a scapegoat among a section of the fans despite scoring 18 goals and registering 17 assists this season with the perception being he hasn't made the impact they had hoped for since his arrival from Barcelona. Some also feel he has been a destabilising influence as he is yet to commit his future to the club beyond the end of the season while he has been involved in spats with Kylian Mbappe.
And audible boos were heard from around the stadium when his name was read out among the starters to face Rennes. PSG are nine points clear at the top of Ligue 1 but fans want more than domestic dominance and it seems some feel Messi is part of the problem.
