Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappe kept out by former Nottingham Forest star after Antonio Conte snub

Djed Spence seems to have recaptured the form and confidence that made him such a huge hit at Nottingham Forest last season.

The attacking right-back was instrumental as the Reds overcame a torrid start to the season under Chris Hughton to win promotion via the play-offs under Steve Cooper.

The Reds were in the reckoning to sign Spence permanently from Middlesbrough last summer, only for Tottenham to win the race for his signature. However, amid suggestions by Antonio Conte that he was a ‘club signing’ and not his, Spence made just five substitute appearances before being farmed out on loan to French side Rennes, where he has secured regular first-team football.

Last weekend, he encountered the toughest test of his career so far when he came up against a Paris Saint-Germain side featuring arguably the two best players on the planet in Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappe.

It was a test Spence came through with flying colour as Rennes secured a memorable 2-0 victory at Parc de Princes thanks to goals early in the second half from Karl Toko Ekambi and Arnaud Kalimuendo Muinga. Spence was lauded by the French media for the way he handled the two standout players at the World Cup.

Get Football News France gave Spence a six out of 10 rating and said: “The Tottenham Hotspur loanee was unstoppable down the right – an all-action performance that saw him win the majority of his defensive duels, as well as offering a constant outlet for his team’s counter-attacks.”

It left some Spurs fans calling for him to be given a fresh chance under Conte’s successor, with the Italian expected to be relieved of his duties following his outburst at the club’s owners and players.
