Linwood man threatened to kill cops after they checked on his welfare

A Linwood man threatened to “f*****g kill” a police officer in a barrage of abuse after he had been arrested for his own safety.

Police attended Scott Carroll’s Greenhill Crescent property in January 2020 after he called NHS 24 stating he “intended to self-harm.”

Rather than welcome assistance from officers who attended to check his welfare, Carroll bombarded them with an onslaught of verbal abuse, calling them “f*****g poofs” and threatening them.

Procurator fiscal depute Katerina Ward told Paisley Sheriff Court: “In the early hours on January 13, 2020, the accused was at home when he had consumed three quarters of a bottle of whisky.

“Shortly after midnight the accused contacted NHS24 regarding his mental state, stating he intended to use a knife to self harm.

“The call handler was concerned about this information and contacted the police, who attended at Carroll’s property.

“Police were directed to the accused who was within a bedroom and became very aggressive to police officers when they informed him he would be searched for a knife.

“The accused began shouting 'F**k off you c***s; get your f*****g hands off me and get out my house.’

“Carroll continued to be verbally abusive.”

The court heard Carroll, now 45, was arrested and placed in a police van to be taken to the police station. Out-of-control Carroll struck his head off the van walls and when asked to stop, the court heard he shouted 'Shut the f**k up you pair of m****s; I’ll kick your c**t in you p***y pr**k.”

Ms Ward continued: “Once arriving at Cathcart police station the accused was placed in a holding cell and told an officer, ‘I’m going to come after you and f*****g kill you, I’m going to hunt you down you p***t pr**k.’

“Carroll was taken to the charge bar where he continued to shout ‘Ya f*****g p***fy b*****d, he likes d**k hot dogs.’

“Carroll was warned of his behaviour but continued to shout, ‘Ya f*****g s******s.’ Due to his aggressive behaviour he wasn’t cautioned and charged at the time.”

Carroll pleaded guilty to acting in an aggressive manner on January 13 2020, by shouting, swearing and uttering offensive remarks aggravated by disability and sexual orientation.

Carroll’s defence agent told how he had been experiencing a “mental health crisis” at the time of the event.

He said: “Carroll didn’t expect the information he told NHS to be given to the police and he was distressed when they attended at his house to check his welfare.

“When he was searched for a knife, no knife was found and he tells me it was a time when he ‘lost the plot.’

“He is in a much better place now and regrets his actions and comments he made to the police. He knows and accepts the comments were wholly unacceptable.”

On sentencing, Sheriff Lindsay Kooner said: “You didn’t expect police to attend but they had a genuine concern for your safety. They attended to try to help you.

“You looked puzzled and horrified listening to the comments that you made to police officers which where completely unacceptable.”

Sheriff Kooner imposed a £380 fine to be paid at £40 per month.
