Line Of Duty is reportedly returning for a three-part special following the underwhelming series six finale. Adrian Dunbar, Martin Compston and Vicky McClure have all signed up to resume their characters Chief Superintendent Ted Hastings, Steve Arnott and Kate Fleming, with show creator Jed Mercurio also back on the scene, as reported by The Sun.
The exciting new development comes after many fans were left disappointed by the last episode, which finally exposed Ian Buckells (Nigel Boyle) as the elusive H. The proposed instalments look set to uncover whether Buckells really is H and fans could get their answers as early as next Christmas.
A TV insider said: "There was a very strong feeling, particularly among fans, that there was unfinished business with Line of Duty. Viewers weren’t satisfied with the ending of series six and were crying out for a more sensational conclusion - now Jed can deliver that. The question is whether the person we were led to believe was H really is the villain that AC-12 has been hunting or if it was another nemesis."

The insider continued to The Sun: "There’s also a theory another, darker puppet master is at work. The fact that they’re looking at taking the unusual step of making three episodes rather than the usual six or seven is a reflection of just how special this is for the show."
The latest reports come just one day after McClure gave fans a glimmer of hope that the show will one day be back after she confirmed the cast is happy to return.
Speaking on Good Morning Britain on Tuesday, she said: ‘I speak to the lads all the time and we’d love to, we’re all game. I think it’s just a case of now – Martin, I think he’s in about nine shows or something. He’s busy, but I’m sure we’ll get there."
